Thank you for this, Daria! I had never considered this and am now convince I need to increase my gait speed. I like the idea of interval walking to gradually increase, and for my husband as well.
That sounds like a great plan! My Mom really slowed down her pace and she was always a pretty fast walker. She became very slow, but it happened gradually. It seems like an important issue we should be aware of to nip things in the bud. Thanks for your comments!
Oh dear, I didn't like this news. At 82, I eat well, exercise a reasonable amount (90 minutes yoga and 25 minutes swimming every week, plus a lot of walking) and am generally in good health. My. parents lived to 90/91. Some days I can walk at what I think is a good speed (but have no idea re your metrics) and some days I feel very slow. I'm not sure I could do much to improve it, but perhaps I am a dead woman walking. Time will tell.
It doesn't sound like that's the case, Ann. You're doing everything you should be doing to keep up the pace. My guess based on your activity level is that you're probably well within the speed range for maintaining health. It is important to remain mindful of how fast or slow you're walking. I think everyone--regardless of age--has a slow day. Anyone who can stand on her head at 82 is probably way ahead in the wellness and longevity game!
