I agree, Rosana. People give me strange looks when I tell them what a great read it is. But I really enjoyed reading it, and learned a lot that really helped me during a difficult time.
Who are those people? ;-) It's a wonderful book, and I also found it highly relevant to read while dealing with my elderly parents' long and painful declines. Made me think a lot about how we tend to value safety over happiness for older people.
I ordered the book after reading this post. Thank you! And. Happy Birthday, Daria!! I wish you many more years of happiness, success, and moments of pure joy.
I thought Being Mortal was fabulous. Excellent choice. It was a big seller for years (don't know now, but I used to track my own book on hospice care (Life in a Hospice) and at one point, they were neck and neck, this one first of course, and I was thrilled!)
We need to be able to have these discussions with ourselves and our loved ones.
Avoiding the conversation makes things so much harder when the time comes when we need to deal with real life and death issues that seem far in the future.
But the future, I’ve learned, comes sooner than we expect and usually when we’re ill prepared for it, even when we think we are prepared.
That's so true Skip. I hope someone finds this book and reads it so they have what they need to deal with those hard discussions. Thank you for your insights.
I loved Being Mortal and feel like it should be required reading for everyone.

Thank you for sharing something so profound and timely. Gawande’s book truly is a quiet gift.
Thank you Jon. It helped me so much I wanted to share it.
Thank you, Patti! I've missed you and your posts. I hope all is well. I hope you find the book helpful and a good read.
