Have you ever heard the saying, "You're only as old as you feel"? It's more than just a cliché—it's a powerful truth backed by science. While your chronological age marks the number of years you've been on this earth, your "subjective age," or how young you feel, can significantly impact your overall health, longevity, and quality of life.
Harboring stereotypical biases about age and aging can be determinative of how we age—from how we look to how we feel and behave. Thinking “old” makes us look and feel older. On the other hand, staying young at heart and thinking of yourself as younger than your actual years can add years to your life and, more importantly, life to your years.
The Science Behind Thinking Young
Research shows that maintaining a youthful mindset is linked to better physical and mental health outcomes. Compelling research conducted by Yale gerontologist, Dr. Becca Levy, as detailed in her book Breaking the Age Code, found that people who identify as being younger are physiologically younger than their chronological age. Levy's work has demonstrated that individuals with more positive age beliefs live on average 7.5 years longer than those with more negative beliefs about aging. Her studies have found that people with positive age perceptions are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors, have better cardiovascular function, and experience less cognitive decline as they get older.
A study published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience found that MRI scans of individuals who viewed themselves as younger had healthier brains, with less age-related decline compared to those who felt older. This research underscores the power of mindset in influencing not just how we feel but also how our bodies age at a cellular and neurological level.
Another fascinating study that illustrates the power of mindset is the Counterclockwise study conducted by psychologist Ellen Langer in 1979. In this study, a group of elderly men was taken to a retreat that was retrofitted to resemble the year 1959, complete with magazines, music, and decor from that era. The participants were encouraged to act as if they were living in 1959, discussing past events as if they were current. After just one week, these men showed remarkable improvements in physical strength, posture, vision, and even cognitive abilities. This groundbreaking study demonstrated that by mentally placing themselves in a younger time, these men were able to "turn back the clock" on some aspects of aging.
These studies demonstrate that your perceived age—also referred to as your “age identity”—influences your health and overall well-being. The reason for this may be rooted in the self-fulfilling nature of our beliefs. When we view aging as a time of inevitable decline and uselessness, we are more likely to act in ways that bring about those outcomes: being sedentary, isolating ourselves, and giving up on new experiences and growth. On the other hand, maintaining a youthful, lighthearted mindset encourages us to stay active and socially engaged, while continuously learning and exploring.
How to Cultivate a Youthful Spirit
Staying “young at heart” is about embracing life with a vibrant, positive attitude. So how can we cultivate that young-at-heart mentality as we age? Here are some evidence-based strategies:
Reframe your inner dialogue and adopt a positive mindset. Be mindful of the language you use to describe aging. Instead of saying "I'm getting too old for that," try "I'm excited to take on a new challenge." Avoid negative stereotypes and remind yourself that age is just a number. Your mindset has a profound impact on how you experience aging. Positive thinking reduces stress, enhances resilience, and fosters a sense of joy and fulfillment. Cultivating a positive attitude, practicing gratitude, and focusing on what you can do rather than what you can't are key to staying young at heart.
Laugh often and don't take yourself too seriously. Laughing and maintaining a sense of playfulness helps reduce stress, boosts mood and your immune system, and fosters a sense of joy and connection. Laughter truly is the best medicine. Don’t be afraid to be a little goofy sometimes! Laugh at yourself and embrace the lighter side of life. Taking things too seriously can weigh you down; instead, allow yourself to find humor in everyday situations.
Let go of grudges. Holding on to anger and resentment only burdens you and can age you emotionally and physically. Practice forgiveness and focus your energy on more positive pursuits. Studies show that forgiveness can lead to better mental health, reduced stress, and a more positive outlook on life. Letting go of past grievances frees you to live in the present with a lighter heart and a more youthful spirit.
Live in the present moment. Staying young at heart means living in the moment and not dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Appreciate each day as it comes and find joy in the simple pleasures of life. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing, can help you focus on the present, thereby reducing stress and enhancing your overall well-being. By embracing the now, you can cultivate a more vibrant and youthful outlook on life.
Embrace lifelong learning. Keep your brain young and agile by regularly learning new skills, whether it's a foreign language, a musical instrument, or coding. Challenging your mind helps generate new neural pathways. Keeping your mind active is just as important as keeping your body fit. Learning new things stimulates your brain, enhances cognitive function, and keeps you curious and engaged with the world. The act of learning in itself can make you feel younger and more vibrant.
Stay physically active. Movement not only keeps your body healthy, but releases feel-good endorphins that boost your mood and outlook. It’s a powerful tool for maintaining both physical and mental youthfulness. Regular physical activity helps keep your body strong, flexible, and energized. It also boosts mood, reduces stress, and improves cognitive function. Whether it's walking, dancing, swimming, or yoga, find an activity that you enjoy and make it a regular part of your routine. Aim for a mix of cardio, strength training, and flexibility work.
Nurture your social connections. Strong relationships and a sense of community are vital for healthy aging. Make time to catch up with friends, join a club or class, or volunteer to stay socially engaged. Strong social ties are essential for maintaining a youthful spirit. Engaging with others helps prevent feelings of isolation and loneliness, which can accelerate aging. Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people can boost your emotional health and keep you feeling young.
Find purpose and meaning. Pursuing activities that you're passionate about and that contribute to the greater good can provide a sense of purpose that fuels your youthful spirit.
Embrace playfulness and creativity. Allow yourself to be playful and creative—qualities often associated with youth. Engage in activities that bring you joy and allow you to express yourself, whether it's painting, writing, gardening, or playing a musical instrument. Playfulness and creativity can keep your spirit light and energized.
Continue to pursue your dreams. Pursuing your dreams and aspirations, regardless of age, keeps us curious, excited, and open to new experiences—all hallmarks of a youthful outlook. By refusing to settle or become complacent, we challenge ourselves to grow and evolve, much as we did in our younger years. This continuous personal growth and sense of possibility invigorates us, keeping our minds sharp and our hearts full of hope and optimism. In essence, following our dreams becomes a fountain of youth for our spirits, proving that age is truly just a number when it comes to living a fulfilling life.
Take Care of Your Health. Staying young at heart also means taking care of your physical health. Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, get regular check-ups, and manage any chronic conditions effectively. When your body feels good, it's easier to maintain a youthful outlook on life.
So remember, age is just a number. By adopting these mindsets and behaviors, you can harness the power of positivity to enjoy a long, vibrant life. Live your life with youthful exuberance and tap into the fountain of youth that lies within you.
Leave a comment and let me know how young you feel. What’s your “age identity?”
Excellent! Thanks, Daria!
Great tips! I would also add that, in my case, working with young people helps a lot :) I work as a teacher in K9-12, and I really believe those young people keep my younger in my head :)
